Information
on Storage and Transportation of Firearms (NSW)
Securing
a safe to the structure
The
mounting and positioning of the safe is important and consideration should be
given to positioning to make it difficult to jemmy open eg a safe placed in a
corner with the lock closest to the wall would be more difficult to cut or
jemmy open.
The safe
must be bolted to the structure of the premises as follows:
- When mounted onto brick, stone
or concrete, it must be attached by at least four (4) masonry anchors 90mm
in length and 10mm in diameter internally fitted through holes in the rear
and base of the container, securing it to the floor and wall. In the case
of level 1 containers the floor of the safe must also be flush with its
base.
- When mounting onto main wall
studs or floor bearers, it must be fitted flush against the wall and
secured to the wall studs and floor bearers by four (4) galvanised hexagon
head coach screws, not less than 65mm in length and 8mm in diameter. In
the case of level 1 containers, ensure that the
container is flush with its base.
Inspection
of storage facilities
Owners of
firearms must allow a police officer to inspect facilities at a mutually
agreeable time. Similar conditions apply to permits.
Transportation
of firearms
Owners of
firearms must take all reasonable precautions to ensure that when a firearm is
not in their possession it is kept in a place which will prevent unauthorised
access or use of the firearm.
Precautions
which the Commissioner would consider reasonable in these circumstances
include:
- the use of devices such as trigger
locks or other commercial devices designed to reduce the risk of
unauthorised use of the firearm/s.
- the firearm being placed unloaded,
out of sight, in the boot/trunk or other concealed area of a locked motor
vehicle or room of a residence,
- ammunition must be locked in a separate
container inside the vehicle eg. in the
boot/trunk, glove box, or a locked container in a vehicle.
Where
firearms must be carried in public or on public transport, the firearm/s should
be suitably concealed in a carry case or wrapped so as to be unobtrusive and
inoffensive to members of the public.
Commercial
Transportation
Where
deliveries are being made on behalf of or by firearms dealers, they must:
- be transported concealed in a
locked container which is secured to the vehicle or in a locked
compartment.
